Drooping breasts
BREAST PTOSIS CORRECTION
A sagging of the breasts (or mammary ptosis) generally occurs after a woman has lost a lot of weight or a pregnancy. Ptosis can be isolated or combined with mammary hypertrophy or hypoplasia which can be corrected during the same operation. The purpose of plastic surgery to correct ptosis is to raise the areola and nipple back up and remodel the gland to give it volume and a harmonious shape. To do this, the aesthetic surgeon makes an incision around the areola and a vertical incision. An inverted “T” shaped incision, in the furrow under the breast, sometimes needs to be used.
This operation is usually not very painful. The drains installed are usually removed after 24 hours, at the same time as the first dressing and the patient is then advised to wear a bra night and day for a month. The stiches are removed after two weeks, and the surface bruising usually disappears after two or three weeks. A temporary numbness of the nipples can sometimes take a few months to disappear.
The main risk lies in scarring, so a close eye will be kept on this. There may still be some slight asymmetry – which was usually already there before the operation - afterwards.
Ptosis correction can be performed from the age of 17 onwards. It is still possible to breastfeed after the operation. After the operation the breast remains natural and sensitive to hormonal changes and variations in weight.
