Objectives of Abdominoplasty

Abdominal surgery or abdominoplasty is the aesthetic surgery of the abdomen.

This procedure consists of removing excess fat and skin from the stomach area and tightening the surrounding healthy skin.

Abdominoplasty is considered when localized liposuction is insufficient to achieve satisfactory results for skin lesions in this area (loss of tone, significant distension, major stretch marks, scars, etc.) or when correcting alterations to the muscular wall (sagging, diastasis, hernias, etc.).

In recent years, this procedure has benefited from technical improvements that reduce the risks associated with the surgery, ease the post-operative recovery, and minimize residual scarring.

It is even possible to combine abdominoplasty with extensive liposuction without significant detachment of the abdominal wall.

Who is abdominal surgery for?

The main indications for abdominoplasty are as follows:

  • If you have moderate excess skin, a mini-abdominoplasty will generally suffice.
  • If the excess skin is more significant, an extended abdominoplasty will be necessary.
  • In cases of distension of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis), muscle repair is performed simultaneously.
  • Depending on the case, liposuction of the flanks and abdomen is associated with the abdominoplasty during the same surgical session.

Abdominoplasty is generally made necessary by the effects of weight loss after obesity or multiple diets, aging, or multiple pregnancies.

If there is significant excess weight, this should be corrected as much as possible, partially or totally, before the surgical procedure. This ensures better conditions for the intervention, both in terms of safety and the quality of the results.

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can involve risks and complications. A first consultation with your surgeon is essential to know if this intervention is adapted to your particular situation.

Before and after pictures

The Abdominoplasty Procedure

Abdominoplasty will positively transform your silhouette and offer you a flatter, firmer stomach. The results are permanent.

Follow your surgeon’s recommendations to optimize the healing process and the quality of the result.

Before the intervention

The first consultation is essential to understand your request and your motivations. Based on your morphology and anatomy, your surgeon will determine the operative strategy.

The goal is to achieve a result tailored to your silhouette that corrects the various imperfections of this area to meet your expectations.

Your surgeon will perform a clinical examination to precisely analyze the existing lesions and the quality of the skin.

Imaging tests may be necessary to identify muscular deficits. A preoperative health check-up will be carried out in accordance with prescriptions.

Anesthesia

Abdominoplasty is generally performed under general anesthesia, with a hospital stay of 2 to 5 days, depending on the case.

Without muscle repair, it can sometimes be performed under partial anesthesia. The choice of the technique will be made between you, your anesthesiologist and your surgeon.

A consultation with your anesthesiologist will take place a few days before your procedure.

The day of the procedure

Your surgeon will adapt his operating strategy according to your particular case in order to obtain the best possible result. However, these basic principles common to the procedure can be outlined:

Initial liposuction removes excess fat; then the abdominal incision is made in a fold above the pubis. The remaining skin (above the navel) is draped downwards and may benefit from “quilting” to reattach it to the underlying muscle wall, thereby improving tension (particularly in the upper portion) and closing the detachment space to limit the risk of fluid collection.

At the end of the procedure, a shaping dressing is applied, with or without the placement of a compression garment.

The duration of the procedure varies between 90 minutes and 3 hours, depending on the extent of the work required. Suction drains are left in place for 1 to 3 days.

The scar is horizontal, placed above the pubis, and its length depends on the amount of skin removed. A small circular scar remains around the umbilicus.

A compression dressing or an elastic garment is put in place.

After the procedure

Pain levels vary but are generally manageable with appropriate treatment, primarily manifesting as tension and abdominal muscle soreness.

Any swelling or bruising disappears after a few days or weeks. Wearing an abdominal belt or compression garment is necessary for 4 to 6 weeks. Allow 3 to 4 weeks before resuming activities and 6 to 8 weeks before returning to sports.

To ensure proper healing, smoking is prohibited. Sun exposure should be avoided for one year. Manual lymphatic drainage from the first few days, followed by Endermologie® treatments, will accelerate the resorption of edema and optimize healing.

A balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle will help maintain the results. Pregnancy is possible one year after the procedure.

Results

Regardless of the extent of the procedure, results are appreciable and visible after approximately 2 months. The final result is assessed after one year, the time required for the scar to fade.

Furthermore, regarding the scar, its optimal positioning generally allows it to be easily hidden in standard underwear or swimwear.

Beyond the aesthetic improvement, which is often significant and sometimes even spectacular in terms of silhouette, abdominal surgeries provide a very clear improvement in terms of comfort.

Moreover, this functional improvement and the resulting psychological well-being help patients in maintaining their weight balance.

The goal of this surgery is to bring an improvement and not to achieve perfection. If your wishes are realistic, the result should give you great satisfaction.

Associated treatments

It is possible to perform an additional liposuction or a lipofilling (liposculpture) in order to further improve the results of an abdominoplasty, thus reshaping the shapes of the body for a more harmonious and proportionate silhouette.

High-Definition Abdominal Liposculpture

High-definition abdominal liposculpture is a liposuction technique that allows for the reshaping of abdominal muscles through a lipomodeling (liposculpture) procedure. However, the enhanced contours will differ depending on the patient’s sex.

The procedure consists of highlighting the abdominals by suctioning abdominal fat in the areas of muscle intersections. HD liposculpture of the abdomen is a procedure that takes at least twice as long as conventional liposuction.
