About Teeth Whitening

Objectives of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a technique using products based on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide that lighten teeth and modify their color for a radiant and natural smile

Over time, several factors affect the color of teeth. Among these various factors, the patient’s age, genetics, the use of certain medications, certain beverages such as red wine, tea and coffee, as well as tobacco consumption alter the appearance and beauty of the smile.

Teeth become yellow, gray or dark. By consuming these types of liquids, teeth become more yellow or brown.

Different teeth whitening methods exist and depending on the indication, our specialist will recommend the most suitable method.
There are different teeth whitening techniques:

In-office whitening, which provides immediate results and consists of combining a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide gel with an LED lamp.

At-home whitening, which consists of creating custom-made trays and filling them with a lower-concentration peroxide, which can be prescribed in addition to in-office whitening or alone. The patient wears the trays for a few minutes to a few hours per day or all night depending on the type of peroxide used and the desired results. The treatment lasts several weeks and the result will be progressive.

Finally, internal whitening consists of placing a hydrogen peroxide-based product inside a devitalized tooth and leaving it to act for 24 to 48 hours, rarely longer. Two to three sessions are necessary to restore the tooth’s original color.

It should be noted that the degree of whitening varies from one patient to another, depending on the tooth structure, the extent, intensity and type of discoloration.

Who Is Teeth Whitening For?

Teeth whitening is intended for people with stained, yellowed or devitalized teeth. It is essential before treatment with dental veneers to enhance your smile. To benefit from this treatment, you must first have healthy teeth and gums, good dental hygiene and ideally avoid smoking before starting the treatment. Teeth whitening is prohibited for minors and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

An initial consultation with your specialist is essential to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific situation.

Teeth Whitening Procedure

The treatment begins with an assessment of your dental condition so that your dentist can ensure good overall oral health and determine the cause of stains on the teeth. Scaling is mandatory beforehand, then a session includes photos and shade measurement before and after whitening, as well as explanations of the protocol. If the teeth are sensitive to cold, they will be desensitized beforehand by fluoridation.

Impressions will be taken during the first consultation.
For in-office whitening, the session consists of applying the peroxide gel to the teeth. Once activated by the LED lamp, the product quickly penetrates the enamel to interact with the coloring substances responsible for changing the color of the dentin. Your dentist repeats the process 1 to 4 times during the session. Each of these applications includes the application, photoactivation and removal of the gel. The session lasts up to 60 minutes. Sometimes, several sessions are required.

For at-home whitening with tray wear, your dentist takes an impression of your upper and lower jaws and has the trays made in just one hour. Then they show you how to apply the gel inside the tray. The trays are generally worn at night and the duration of treatment varies from one patient to another depending on how the teeth respond to the teeth whitening product.

Aftercare

Mild tingling may sometimes be felt immediately after the teeth whitening procedure, but it always subsides.

Your dentist may recommend products designed to relieve sensitivity after treatment.

You should avoid consuming foods or beverages that may stain your teeth (coffee, tea, red wine, etc.) for the first 2 days after the session and refrain from smoking.

The Results

The results of teeth whitening are visible immediately after the session. The teeth are whiter and the stains have disappeared.

The results last on average twelve to twenty-four months depending on the patient’s oral hygiene and lifestyle habits.

The goal of this treatment is to provide improvement and not to achieve perfection. If your expectations remain realistic, the obtained result should give you utmost satisfaction.
