Objectives of genioplasty
Genioplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that reshapes the chin to restore the balance between the different parts of the face. This operation consists of modifying the appearance of the chin bone in a natural and permanent way.
This chin procedure is sometimes combined with jaw surgery (maxillary and/or mandibular osteotomy) or with rhinoplasty (surgical nose procedure) as part of a profiloplasty.
The aim is to achieve a natural-looking chin. If there is also excess fat, your surgeon may sometimes advise combining the procedure with neck liposuction. This technique effectively corrects chin imperfections.
Each genioplasty is unique and the aesthetic objective will be to achieve a natural-looking chin, in harmony with the overall shape of your face and your personality, whether through the placement of an implant, lipofilling, reshaping, or hyaluronic acid injections.
Who is genioplasty for?
Genioplasty is possible from the age of 18 to remedy a morphological abnormality of the chin. To correct the shape of the mandible, the tip of the chin is moved forward or backwardand fixed with titanium screws.

If the chin lacks projection, it can be augmented with an implant (or prosthesis) inserted through a discreet scar positioned under the chin. The implant is very well tolerated and brings exceptional results. The implant, concealed by the thickness of the fat and muscles of the chin, remains stable and offers a natural appearance. It is also possible to opt for lipofilling, a technique that increases volume through fat injections.
Genioplasty is a surgical procedure that may involve risks and complications. In all cases, an initial consultation with your surgical specialist is essential to determine whether this cosmetic chin surgery is suitable for your specific situation.

How genioplasty is performed
Genioplasty will positively transform the harmony of your face. The results are permanent.
Follow your doctor’s recommendations carefully to optimise the healing process and the quality of the result.
Before the intervention
The first appointment is essential to understand your request and your motivations. It is also an opportunity for your surgeon to carefully analyse the anatomy of your face in order to ensure that the surgery will enhance your face and provide genuine rejuvenation.
The specialist will carry out a full facial examination and will analyse in particular the shape and position of the chin, as well as the relationship between the lips.
He will make sure that the bad position of the chin is not consecutive to an anomaly of the position of the lower jaw or the mandible. The consultation will also make it possible to evaluate the necessity of an associated submental liposuction. A pre-operative health check will be carried out to verify the absence of contraindications.
Anesthesia
Generally, genioplasty is performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia with sedation. However, in some cases, general narcosis may be proposed. The choice of the technique will be made between you, your anesthesiologist and your surgeon.
A consultation with your anesthesiologist will take place a few days before your procedure.
The day of the procedure
If the genioplasty is performed with an implant, the incision is generally located under the chin, thus the scar will remain almost invisible after healing. The intervention can take place under local anesthesia with sedation, it generally lasts about 45 minutes and takes place on an outpatient basis.
If the doctor has opted for a mandibular osteotomy, he will first make an incision in the buccal mucosa. In this case, there will be no visible skin scar.
A mandibular osteotomy means that the bony chin will be fractured in a precise and controlled manner below the tooth roots to allow the bone fragment to be moved in the desired direction (setback, advancement, lowering, elevation, lateral deviation).
Sutures are then placed inside the mouth and disappear within 2 to 4 weeks, or are sometimes removed during a follow-up consultation.
Bone consolidation is obtained after a month and a half. The procedure lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.
After the procedure
Genioplasty is a painless procedure. The patient is able to move his jaw safely. Wearing a modeling bandage under the chin is necessary for 5 to 8 days.
Bruising and swelling may persist for about two weeks. It is also recommended to eat semi-liquid or soft food, preferably cold, for two days. Mouthwashes are necessary during the first week.
You can resume your socio-professional activities after eight days. The displacement of the chin modifies the face in a more or less important way. However, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the operation once the edema has subsided, with regular check-ups.
Results
The change is immediate, and the chin takes on its final appearance after two to three months, once the swelling has subsided.
The procedure generally provides significant morphological and aesthetic improvement as well as considerable psychological benefit.
The goal of this surgery is to bring an improvement and not to achieve perfection. If your expectations are realistic, the effects of the surgery should give you a very high level of satisfaction.

Explanations
The art of genioplasty at Laclinic
At Laclinic, the artistic skills of the surgeons are essential for each intervention. Obtaining a tailor-made result for each patient is the main objective of chin surgery. The challenge consists in respecting the ideal proportions dictated by the golden ratio , both from the front and in profile to sublimate the harmony of the face .
From the front, the chin must be proportional with the upper thirds of the face, in particular the projection of the cheekbones and the mandibular angles. As for the tip of the chin, it should ideally be vertically aligned with the base of the forehead. Of course, the result must remain as natural as possible.

Around the surgery
The first consultation
The first appointment is essential to identify your needs and expectations. Our specialists will take all the necessary time to understand your demand and offer you the best advice.
Anesthesia
Sensitive to the potentially traumatic dimension of any operation, Laclinic's doctors pay close attention to pain management to make the operation as comfortable and safe as possible.
Associated treatments
Genioplasty is sometimes combined with a rhinoplasty, neck liposuction, or a facelift, or sometimes surgery on the lips, to restore harmonious facial proportions for the patient from the front as well as in profile. The aim is to create facial harmony between the nose, lips, chin, cheeks, and neck. This is then referred to as profiloplasty.
Medical genioplasty
Hyaluronic acid injections are an interesting non-invasive alternative for reshaping the chin and correcting its imperfections:
- Add projection for a receding chin
- Feminise the chin by creating a point with hyaluronic acid
- Correct the orange-peel effect with botulinum toxin
- Fill a labiomental fold
The duration of results from hyaluronic acid injections varies between 18 months and 2 years depending on the patient.
