What is an anal abscess?
A perianal abscess is an accumulation of pus in the tissues around the anus, following an infection. It presents with severe and increasing pain, a warm, red swelling near the anus, and sometimes fever.
Unlike other proctological conditions, an abscess progresses quickly and is a relative emergency: it requires prompt care.
What are the symptoms?

Severe, throbbing pain that worsens over a few hours to a few days, often aggravated when sitting.

A warm, red, tender lump around the anus, indicating an accumulation of pus.

How is an anal abscess treated?
The standard treatment for an abscess is surgical drainage, which evacuates the pus and relieves pain.
Performed under appropriate anaesthesia, it is generally quick. Early management limits the risk of the infection spreading and of complications.
In some cases, placement of a seton for effective drainage is indicated.
Abscess and fistula: anticipating what comes next
A perianal abscess frequently progresses to an anal fistula, a chronic sequela of the same infectious process.
