What is an anal fissure?
An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the anal canal. Although benign, it is very painful and is among the most frequent causes of anal pain.
It typically manifests as sharp pain during and after bowel movements, which can last for hours, sometimes accompanied by bright red bleeding.
At Laclinic-Montreux, its management is provided by a specialist, from medical treatment to minimally invasive surgical correction using LASER with the non-contact LOMA device, when necessary.
What are the symptoms?
Pain
Intense, knife-like pain, triggered by bowel movements and potentially lasting several hours. This is the most indicative symptom.

Bleeding
A small amount of bright red blood on toilet paper or on the surface of the stool.

Contracture
A sphincter spasm, which perpetuates the pain and hinders healing, creating a vicious cycle.
How is an anal fissure treated?
Management depends on whether the fissure is recent or chronic. The proctological examination at the start of the consultation guides the strategy.
Medical Treatment
A recent fissure often heals with medical treatment: bowel regularity, healing ointments or sphincter relaxants, and hygiene measures. This is the first step in the majority of cases.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
When the fissure becomes chronic or resistant, a minimally invasive procedure can relieve the spasm and promote healing (tactical sphincterotomy with LASER, LaFip, LOMA device). Performed on an outpatient basis, with simplified recovery.
Why consult without delay?
A fissure treated early heals more simply. If neglected, it tends to become chronic, more difficult to treat, and a source of lasting discomfort.
In most cases, anal fissures are associated with hemorrhoids: hypoxia caused by venous stasis weakens tissues, making them tear more easily. A chronic fissure can also become superinfected, leading to more severe complications. Very frequently, the hemorrhoids are treated at the same time.
Any anal bleeding also warrants medical advice to confirm its benign origin.
